This really got my attention, as the trend today is to caution everyone AWAY from any internal use product, think lubes, that contains glycerin to avoid that evil yeasty thing! …. read on!

Glycerin is NOT a Sugar! The Sticky Situation of Glycerin in Lubes by Kim Airs

Okay, I know I might get crucified for this blog. For the majority of my 20 years in this wacky business since opening my own sexuality boutiques both online and in bricks and mortar, I– and most likely you– have been preaching from the pulpit that glycerin in a sugar and should be avoided in lubricants. Well, my friends, time for a little hard core science to prove to you that glycerin is NOT a sugar! Hang with me on this one: it will change your mind and thinking, too.

Many people have the belief that glycerin, a major ingredient in many lubricants, can cause or exacerbate yeast infections. This simply is not true. The popular belief is that yeast feeds on sugar, and that’s what glycerin is. But here’s the truth: Glycerin in and of itself is NOT a sugar but a sugar ALCOHOL and does NOT contain the components of a sugar that actively feed yeast or other bacteria. Again, it is a sugar alcohol and has the chemical make up similar to both of those.

You know, I don’t throw italics in my blogs that often so you know when I do, I really want you to pay attention.

Okay, back to science. According to Wikipedia, Glycerol (or glycerine, glycerin) is a simple polyol compound. It is a colorless, odorless, viscous liquid that is widely used in pharmaceutical formulations. Glycerol has three hydroxyl groups that are responsible for its solubility in water and its hygroscopic nature. The glycerol backbone is central to all lipids known as triglycerides. Glycerol is sweet-tasting and of low toxicity and click on the link here if you want to read a lot of chemical compounding mumbo-jumbo about the actual make up of glycerin and polyols. Ah, chemistry… see, you shouldn’t have slept through it in high school.

Glycerin is constantly being confused with sugar because it has a sweet taste and because it is used as a sweetener in many different low-carb and dietary foods. During metabolization, which is what the body does to break down food in its digestive system, glycerin can be converted to glucose by the LIVER. HOWEVER, glycerin cannot be converted to glucose in the vagina because the last time I checked, my liver was not attached to my vagina in any way, shape, or form. For yeast to thrive, they need a sugar such as glucose, NOT an alcohol as glycerin is. Keep following me here…

So that’s basically what is going on. DIGESTED glycerin WILL change into a sugar in the body when it’s digested through the system so that’s why someone who is diabetic, for example, needs to be careful with their glycerin intake. But when you’re gonna smear lube around your girly bits, toys, or on his giblets, before and during your ins and outs, you have NOTHING to worry about. Glycerin based lube will NOT go through the metabolization process and will NOT turn into that pesky sugar everyone falsely blames on reoccurring yeast infections.

But let’s step back a moment to look at what a yeast infection is… sure, it could be the scourge of your local baker when a yeast infection churns its way into the sourdough, but when it comes to women, this is what it is and this is what it does:

First of all, yeast infections don’t happen as often as you’d think! The vagina is an incredibly complex eco-system, a place where heaven and earth come together, a place of mystery and power, a deep, dark pleasure cave that can topple governments… I’m getting ahead of myself and romanticizing vaginas. Glad I own one.

Back to science: Vaginal yeast infections are caused by Candida albicans, which are, in extremely small amounts, usually part of a woman’s vaginal makeup (VAGINAL MAKEUP! There’s a market for that, I’m sure!) and inside the honey walls o’ pleasure, there’s also a few bacteria hanging around for good measure, too. Like a bad weed, sometimes the yeast can go galloping through your vag faster than Paul Revere shouting “The yeasties are coming! The yeasties are coming!” And the culprits can be things like a change in the in the vaginal environment such as injury (that can be caused by using not enough lube! Yep!), sexual transmission, HIV, douching, underwear, what you EAT, drugs, birth control pills (or other hormonal imbalances) and additional common causes. For example, taking oft-prescribed antibiotics can kill off bacteria but antibiotics may also kill off the cells in the vagina that normally keep the balance between bacteria and yeast at bay so when the bacteria’s away, the yeast will play. Whew!

What kind of panties are you wearing, little girl with the yeast infection? Those sexy satiny ones are probably not the best choice and even while they look smokin’ hot, your crotch definitely begs for cotton which breathes a lot more. Yep, cotton. Yeasties love vaginas as much as heat seeking body missles do so try to keep your snatch happy and just moist enough to keep the walls from sticking to each other. Gosh! What a delicate balancing act we have!

But wait! There’s more! Deodorant soaps will zap your natural moisture (and naturally occurring bacteria) as will commercially available douches. Speaking of which, a woman’s vag scent is an exotic blend of juices that is to be pleasured and enjoyed, not masked with “Summer Daisy Field” scent, no matter what they say.

I feel another blog coming on… so I’ll get back to the sugar/yeast infection thing.

Blast panels are tests where labs inoculate molecules such as glycerin with bacteria and yeast and it is often shown in these tests that glycerin and glycerin based lubes have a reverse effect on yeast almost to an anti-microbial classification. Yep, you read right. The OPPOSITE effect! Glycerin has to be bonded to several other molecules to become a complete sugar capable of feeding yeast which is what happens when you DIGEST glycerin and not introduce it into the tender cavity known as a vagina.

Okay, here’s another example of what I’m sayin’ Glad you’ve made it this far with all this hard science. There won’t be a quiz and I’ll give you an A when you’re done reading.

Many OTC (over the counter) yeast infection remedies and even homeopathic ones contain the inactive ingredient of glycerin to keep them slippery when sliding in for medicinal use. Glycerin in these products allows the medicine to be evenly dispersed within the vagina and if glycerin CAUSES yeast infections, do you really think it would be an ingredient in these products? Go figure.

Part Two~ The Personal Journey

We toured for one day to the Po Lin monastery, fishing village, private temples, the giant Tian Ten Buddha (112’ tall, or the height of the Statue of Liberty, gulp), and took a cable car back, which took our breaths away. Not just from the panoramic beauty from up high in the dangling little car, but the adrenaline rush! Three days in Hong Kong was not enough. I hope to be going back again to indulge in its multiplicity of places to see, things to do and fascinating people to meet.

Once back to work, we were bused, flown and driven to our 3^rd destination: Hangzhou; this city is a modern wonder: Green with technology and urban flair, with a memorable lake set from the images of an ancient Chinese painting, modern buildings, fast paced urban buzz and lots of shopping. We attended a tour of brand new industrial parks and were graced with a “longevity celebration” and banquet honoring our leader, Dr. Ted McIlvenna, for his 81^st year.

Each meal in China was more delicious, creatively prepared and delectable than the one before. I could eat this food for a lifetime! Bring it on.

We decided to take a side trip the day before our final one, and spent one of the most exciting days of my life in Shanghai; taking the bullet train the 300 miles took less than an hour (do the math) and once there, it catapulted us into a state of shock and awe to see the labyrinth of sub-cultures, neighborhood riches, and local landmarks. A day I will never forget. This is the largest city proper by population in the world, at 23 million plus, yet feels mellow, orderly, upscale and welcoming.

Our trip home was thankfully unmemorable despite being a 24-hour trip by bus, plane, and another plane. The jetlag is a killer but all of it is worth a lifetime of great memories. All of us (30+ sexologists from the USA and other countries as part of our IASHS delegation of visiting sexology scholars) left China with the afterglow and knowing that we are making a difference in the lives of billions of Chinese women, helping them to find their way toward sexual health, pleasure and empowerment. It was worth every minute and penny we all invested in this life-changing trip.

Observations~What I learned from China

Sexological and socially relevant themes:

*The Chinese 1 child policy is easing up; so may be the one housing unit per family rule; despite the cultural norm to desire a male-born child, we were told that the “killing of girl babies” was a myth; there are housing areas set aside for DINKs (double income no kids couples); there is a heritage of homes passed down to boys of farmers in the hillside areas of Hong Kong that are fascinating structures; sex remains a conservative issue; women have not been entitled to their own pleasure or orgasm; this is a revolution to bring forth the female-empowering messages and type of access to sexual health and pleasure (orgasms, for example) as we did as a visiting delegation of sexologists

*Old mixes with the new in China; remnants of the past infuse a modern present

*Socialism is the new communism; free market capitalism is the new socialism; democracy may just be on the horizon, but it has far to go to escape a government-controlled state

*Women are second-class citizens in the bedroom

*Women now dominate as some of the richest most successful billionaires in the boardroom, especially in the hugely growth-driven realm of real estate business development

*China is the new future of the world–just look at their cities! However, as “60 Minutes” happened to air when we were in China, the overbuilding of housing in China, especially in Beijing, and even of entirely empty new cities spells potential disaster with an impending housing bubble that could burst, damaging astronomical economic growth patterns and even provoking civil protests against the government–one of central control that has encouraged rapid development to the point of ruination of natural resources, evacuation and displacement of life in the countryside at the expense of urban-ification, and a desolate picture of people and places in ghost conditions who have liquidated life savings and hopeful dreams for a prosperous future designed to compare with the good ol’ “American Dream”

*Chinese are acculturated to be polite, present and take their time, especially in honoring the elderly and those they respectfully love

*They cherish their land and take care to keep it clean, neat and tidy (no trash)

*Women’s toilets: “squatters” as we dubbed them are as wide spread as mushrooms; they have no seats, just you standing in a power squat, fully clothed, legs in the indentations by the side of the empty hole (hopefully), with toilet paper in all stalls in the city ladies’ rooms; these “squatters” are helping every woman to discover her inner ninja while strengthening her pelvic floor muscles, her legs and butt, and learning how to be strong where it counts. (PS. It makes your PCs strengthened, your gluts tighter, your quads stronger, and eases constipation while giving you a shot at better orgasms)

*Extreme growth and construction are signs of a strong economy and dedication to aggressive pursuit of world dominance; it also has propelled a push toward a baby boom fervor, and has reduced the age of consent to promote more births

*China is intriguing, exciting, a blend of country and city, old and young, rich and poor, West and East and enchants with its unique spell that it casts on visitors like us. Hooray for China’s sexual dreams!!!!

Part One: Starting at Dong Guan

Upon arriving in China In Guangzhou airport then to our 5-star abode (Triumphal Hotel) in Dong Guan, we were amazed! The people were friendly, the spaciousness of the country was mind-blowing, its living standard upwardly mobile, and the enormous amount of construction and development heart palpitating. After surviving the endless flight of almost 16 hours (the same time difference from Los Angeles to China) we needed to rest then explore. It takes a while to adjust to jetlag going Westward by air, but not as badly as coming home.

Our hotel was a palace with a view of the three rivers converging below our high story, including the famous “Pearl River”. Our first day was on our own, exploring the shopping and city life. Everywhere you look is a Wal-Mart, KFC and McDonalds. Almost scary. And then there was the local shopping mecca, near a lovely gardens-park, which caught our attention for its authenticity, charm and endless array of shops.

Our Sino-U.S. Conference of Sexology opened mid afternoon the next day, followed by an animated, lavish banquet sponsored by a huge line of women’s spas, known as Dr Eros. This began our exposure to the wild selection of fine cuisine that China’s regions have to offer. My rice noodles turned out to be jellyfish tentacles, as one example, and some of the fare was delectable though not to be named!

Some of the topics covered at the 2-day conference, where the two worlds interchanged ideas, strategies, experiences and expertise, included: “Petals” the documentary; Chinese Journal of Sexology; the new Sex Coaching by yours truly; Sex for Health; Beijing’s Female Sexual Status Epidemiological Survey Research; Counseling Options; Female Sexual Dysfunction Drugs Study; Sex and Religion; Couples’ Intimacy Treatment Issues; Using Yoga to Rewire the Female Brain for Orgasmic Enhancement; Childhood Sexuality and Sexuality Education; and Fertility In Sexual Medicine. Each contingent shared the podium for this 2-day event, filled with knowledge and insights about both worlds and how to bring them together to enhance the sexual experiences of women in China.

The next day we loaded up the bus and headed to Hong Kong. There we had the privilege of meeting one of the world’s most eminent sexologists, Dr. Emil Ng.

What a pleasure it was to learn about his unique culture and the common sexual attitudes; but mostly it was a treat to tour his fine city, seeing its beauty, vast landscapes, modernity, and ancient influences within and around this gorgeous harbor side urban hub.

Shopping is the theme, as is cross-cultural pollination, as this once British colony is now a legal part of China, yet preserves its own identity and cultural nuances. English was easy to find spoken almost everywhere.

China Here We Come!!!

On March 3rd a large group of visiting scholars from the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality departed from Los Angeles to speak at the Chinese Sexology Conference this March, 2013. This is a first, promoting radical concepts for female sexuality–both for women’s pleasure and health. I was one of those speakers, talking about the role of the new sex coaching in promoting women’s orgasm.

This is one of our first trips to the Far East—We at SexCoachU have been leading International SAR training programs around the world through my training sites at The Institute for Sexual Self Realization and Sex Coach U. But this one was different; being a dignitary and scholar is such an honor! In the late 1960′s I visited Hong Kong, and it was with great surprise and amazement that I have returned to that exotic city once again to explore the sexual cultures and the fine food, shopping and spiritual venues. Oscar Buzz!!! Who Do You Love?

It’s that special time of year again; frankly, one of the favorite things in life to me is the “Academy Awards”. Yes, the glam, the glitz, the buzz, the beauty and the actual recognition for the talents of actors, directors, filmmakers, set designers, composers, all the rest whose craft makes our lives so much richer for being there. I am a movie junkie, okay, I admit it. And if you’ve followed me for a while you know I not only love to SEE movies but dish about them! And, in case you haven’t caught up with the new media, Dr. Robert Dunlap and I are now hosting a weekly webisode at SexCoachU at the bottom of our home page, called “Sex@TheMovies”– featuring our spin in depth on what’s hot, what’s not and why a couple of sexdocs care about movies. We will be offering our personal picks for Oscar wins right before the Oscars; but for now, who do YOU love?

Best Actor Nominees: Bradley Cooper-yes; Daniel Day-Lewis-no; Hugh Jackman-maybe; Joaquin Phoenix-deserves it; Denzel Washington-his usual best
Best Actress Nominees:Jessica Chastain-not really; Jennifer Lawrence-deserves it; Emmanuelle Riva-should win it; Quvenzhane Wallis-charming and strong but not yet; Naomi Watts-OMG
Best Director Nominees: Michael Haneke-deserves it; Ang Lee-yes please!; David O. Russell-deserves it, too; Steven Spielberg-no way; Benh Zietlin–a rising star director but not yet
Best Picture:Amour-not for this category but brilliant; Argo-yes!!!; Beasts of the Southern Wild-amazing but no; Django Unchained–no effing way with such gratuitous violence; Les Miserables-puhleez, no way; Life of Pi–yes!!! Should go to both them and Argo; Lincoln-I fell sleep; Silver Linings Playbook-a close second; Zero Dark Thirty-totally overrated though good, but not as good as Hurt Locker.

The Day of Love….A Valentine’s Day Wish For You

Wishing you a romantic, love-filled day (and whole lifetime) of nothing but the best that your sexuality and your emotional self can manifest for your well-being. I love this day! I am not a big fan of commercial holidays, but a day that celebrates and focuses on the power of LOVE is a day to support! Love is a verb. Not a noun. It’s something you send out, receive, engage in the process of sharing and bathe inside of…like floating in a golden bath of light or water, we all can benefit from the powers of love. Valentine’s Day (despite the legends and origins) is a time to take care of your own self-love, love for a mate or beloved, and the essence of being alive. I like to send myself a valentine each year or buy a special momento. I keep a smile on my face each Valentine’s Day, recalling the times when I was a little girl and worked for days and nights the week before VD, gluing, cutting, designing to make my own red-paper-and-white-lace hearts-shaped cards for those boys in my classes who evoked warmth in my heart (and maybe elsewhere)…Those special playful and hopeful times are the times we all long to reconnect with and feel once more. I send you that feeling today! Feel happy, feel love for yourself and those in your own personal life, and know that you are loved.
